Twilight Saga Charity Quilt: Edward's Diamond Heart

[Edward] pulled my left wrist away from my leg, and touched the silver bracelet for just a moment. Then he gave me my arm back.

I examined it cautiously. On the opposite side of the chain from the wolf, there now hung a brilliant heart-shaped crystal. It was cut in a million facets, so that even in the subdued light shining from the lamp, it sparkled. I inhaled a low gasp.

“It was my mother’s.” He shrugged deprecatingly. “I inherited quite a few baubles like this. I’ve given some to Esme and Alice both. So, clearly, this is not a big deal in any way.”

I smiled ruefully at his assurance.

“But I thought it was a good representation,” he continued. “It’s hard and cold.” He laughed. “And it throws rainbows in the sunlight.”

“You forgot the most important similarity,” I murmured. “It’s beautiful.”

“My heart is just as silent,” he mused. “And it, too, is yours.”

I twisted my wrist so the heart would glimmer. “Thank you. For both.”

Edward's Diamond Heart

My Edward's heart block is the pattern of our very own Cat Magraith! I have a love of the heart shape and have made hearts for our last quilt. This heart is paper pieced and made with sparkling white fabrics which just made me think of Edward putting his diamond heart charm on Bella's bracelet. The background fabric shimmers in the night highlighting the brightness of Edward's love for Bella!

From Cat:
Well I had the bracelet pattern so I also needed the heart. I did this block as pattern for a BOM that I did a while ago. The diamond heart is more than just the charm that Edward gave Bella, it also represents him. It appears at first to be cold and hard, but it is also strong, indestructible and a real treasure. It also sparkles .

Stephenie Meyer Quilt: Vampire Baseball

[Edward] led me a few feet through the tall, wet ferns and draping moss, around a massive hemlock tree, and w were there, on the edge of an enormous open field in the lap of the Olympic peaks. It was twice the size of any baseball stadium. . . . Farther out I could see Jasper and Alice, at least a quarter of a mile apart, appearing to throw something back and forth, but I never saw any ball. It looked like Carlisle was marking bases, but could they really be that far apart? –Bella Swan, Twilight, page 367

From Wanda:
While looking for fabric for another project I had the good fortune of finding the miniture forest fabric which I used for the background. It totally gave the feeling of the baseball field as being the clearing in the middle of a wooded area just like in the book and movie. And while the vampires didn't have a perfect baseball field in the traditional sense this pieced field takes the looker right away to that part of the story. For some reason I never could get the home plate exactly perfect although I tried several times, but in the end there is no doubt it is vampire baseball! And just to complete it I found baseball and bat buttons. At first I thought I would appliqué a bat and ball but the buttons were perfect and looked the best to me. I loved making this block.

Stephenie Meyer Quilt: The Forks Forest

The trail . . . snaked around the Sitka spruces and the hemlocks, the yews and the maples. I only vaguely knew the names of the trees around me, and all I knew was due to Charlie pointing them out to me from the cruiser window in earlier days. There were many I didn’t know, and others I couldn’t be sure about because they were so covered in green parasites. –Bella Swan, Twilight, page 136

The Forks Forest block was designed and pieced by Wanda.

From Wanda:
My simple Forks trees were inspired by the simple cone trees I saw in a quilt book by Jean Wells. I didn't use any of her blocks but I liked the simplicity of the iron on cone trees with a machine blanket stitch so I made them for my block. I chose different greens for each of the trees to set them apart. I used a water drizzled looking gray fabric for the background which of course gives the feeling of rainy Forks. My Forks sign is a simple stlylized version that reminds you of the real detailed one in the movie which you see going in and out of Forks, Washington.

Lunch with Friends

Twilight and quilting began our association. In the beginning, they were the only things we had in common. We live scattered across the United States and Cat lives on the other side of the world, in Australia. But as we've worked together long-distance on half-a-dozen quilts, we've become friends. This is the most important part of our group and the foundation for our success.

Both Wanda and Iris came to Utah to see the Stephenie Meyer quilt. We visited the quilt while it was displayed at a quilt show, enjoyed lunch together and then did a little shop hopping. It was a really fun time. A few months ago, Wanda, her husband, and their youngest daughter with her husband and their daughter came to Utah again. We enjoyed lunch together and just had a wonderful time visiting and talking about quilting and families and life.

When I decided to attend my cousin's wedding in California last weekend, I was hoping that I might have a chance to meet up with the girls who live there. Iris, Wanda and Jerri Lynn live relatively close to each other, so I texted to find out how close they are to where I was going. As it turned out, Wanda is really close to where the wedding was held and she offered to let me stay with her while I was in town. Not only that, she took me to every place I needed to go. She and her wonderful husband were such gracious hosts and I am so happy that Twilight brought our paths together.

The day after the wedding, Iris drove to the mid-point between her house and Wanda's and we had lunch together. Unfortunately, Jerri Lynn had other plans for the weekend. We had a great time catching up with each other and all the great things that are going on in our lives. There was a little gift exchange and I came away with an Alice doll {thank you, Iris!}.

I had such a fun time that I'm hoping to go back again soon, for a little sewing weekend. We always have a great time when we get together.

Breaking Dawn Charity Quilt: Jason Scott, Attorney at Law

“Are you J. Jenks?” I asked.

“Why're you looking for J?”

“That's my business.” Besides, I didn't have a clue. “Are you J?”

“No.”

We faced each other for a long moment while his sharp eyes ran up and down the fitted pearl gray sheath I wore. His gaze finally made it to my face. “You don't look like the usual customer.”

“I'm probably not the usual,” I admitted. “But I do need to see him as soon as possible.”

“I'm not sure what to do,” he admitted.

“Why don't you tell me your name?”

He grinned. “Max.”

“Nice to meet you, Max. Now, why don't you tell me what you do for the usual?”

His grin became a frown. “Well, J's usual clients don't look a thing like you. Your kind doesn't bother with the downtown office. You just go striaght up to his fancey office in the skyscraper.”

I repeated the other address I had, making the list of numbers a question.

“Yeah, that's the place,” he said, suspicious again. “How come you didn't go there?”

“This was the address I was given—by a very dependable source.”

“If you were up to any good, you wouldn't be here.”

“You've got to be involved in something big. And bad,” he mused.

“It's not really like that.”

“That's what they all say. But who else needs papers? Or can afford to pay J's prices for them, I should say. None of my business anyway,” he said, and then muttered the word married again.

He gave me an entirely new address with basic directions, and then watched me drive away with suspicious, regretful eyes.

At this point, I was ready for almost anything—some kind of James Bond villain's high-tech lair seemed appropriate. So I thought Max must have given me the wrong address as a test. Or maybe the lair was subterranean, underneath this very commonplace strip mall nestled up against a wooded hill in a nice family neighborhood.

I pulled into an open spot and looked up at a tastefully subtle sign that read JASON SCOTT, ATTORNEY AT LAW.

The office inside was beige with celery green accents, inoffensive and unremarkable. . . A fish tank was set into the wall, and a blandly pretty blond receptionist sat behind the desk.

My block represents J. Jenks and the documents Bella must obtain for Jacob and Renesmee. In the book when she finally tracks him down, his office is in a strip shopping mall so I used the brick fabric for that, thinking I've seen brick shopping centers before and it was the only reasonable fabric building material I had! I constructed my façade with raw edge appliqué and Steam-a-Seam to adhere the door and window. I added the pediment at the top of the door just because it seemed to me to look a little more “attorney” like. In the book when Bella enters the office she sees the fish tank and I put in a desk to hold the tablet with the personal info to make the documents. I tried to add a few stitches but in the end had to use my sewing machine to further hold things in place. The idea for this block just came into my head after reading those pages in the book more than a few times!

One Flaw in Women

Eclipse Charity Quilt: Bella's Broken Heart

It had not been Edward and Jacob that I'd been trying to force together, it was the two parts of myself, Edward's Bella and Jacob's Bella. But they could not exist together, and I never should have tried. -Bella Swan, Eclipse, page 608

I used Jennifer Ofenstein's paper pieced pattern on Sewhooked for Bella's Broken Heart. Of course as you know, one piece of the heart belongs to Edward and one piece to Jacob, so in the beginning I experimented with different fabrics in the heart to represent each one. But it just didn't look right so I opted for the traditional red heart using a batik fabric which seemed very heart like to me! The gray background was used to explain the storm and mood in Bella's heart at being torn between two loves.

Eclipse Charity Quilt: Jasper

She took a step closer, and inclined her head as if she were going to kiss me. I stood frozen in place, though my instincts were screaming at me to run. -Jasper Hale, Eclipse, page 295

The Jasper block consists of a machine appliquéd state of Texas and a Confederate uniform. I chose the little star fabric for the "lone star state" and for the star that Jasper wears on his uniform as a Major in 1861. The uniform is machine appliqued as well with some straight stitching for sleeve embellishment and French knots for buttons. Just for fun and interest I might add that in the beginning I wasn't sure how to draw the uniform so I researched on line. Then one day as I looked at a sale ad for Macy's I saw a coat which made me think of the military uniform and that helped me with the lines! The background fabric is a Civil War reproduction print which represents the time frame of his story and the dress fabric for the women he was evacuating and for Maria who changed him.

This is a traditionally pieced love heart with a machine appliquéd paw print to show imprinting. The paw is a rough sketch (not exactly the same) of Cat's paper pieced paw pattern, which was used in our other quilts. I wanted the appliqué  to be similar to that, but felt the best way for me to achieve this was to appliqué it.

Happy news! Last month I became a first time g-ma! David Augustus was born on March 19th weighing in at 8 lbs. and 7 oz. At first the new parents couldn't decide if they would call him David or Gus, but the latter prevailed and so its baby Gus! As all of you know, newborns can be fussy so I call him Afusstus sometimes. As far as being called Grandma I wasn't sure about this so my daughter started calling me Mimi which I love, but will still answer to grandma too. I saw a sign I'm going to buy which reads: MIMI: This chick is way too hip to be called grandma!

A new baby in the family is such a blessing and it felt heavenly as my daughter placed her newborn son in my arms. I fell in love instantly.

I'm working on a monkey quilt for baby Gus (should have had that finished by now) and a special little white collared smocked bubble suit for him to wear to church on his blessing day.

I'd like to say thank you to all those who sent their good wishes, comments and thoughtful gifts. It's been a delight.

TQC Exchange: Wanda's gift from Cat

It's here! My secret exchange gift is here and it is FUN AND FABULOUS, ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! Okay, let me just say thank you right off the bat to Cat for my wonderful box of goodies! Okay first off, the weather was so bad that I put off going to the mail box today and even thought I might just let Pere de Mer get it when he came home, but the rain let up and I decided the fresh air would do me good. And I got more than fresh air! Of course, I saw the country of origin right away and practically ran back to the house so I could get the box open! I love packages in the mail! Love to send them and love to get them! Cat wrote me a lovely card with of course the varigated tulip on the front, and then there was some sparkly Edward fabric!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just today told my daughter that when she goes to Mary Jo's again that I will need a little more of that white sparkle fabric. Thank you! The next thing I unwrapped was a Twilight pin and matching earrings. They are made of buttons! Really cute. The earrings are apples! And then there is a choker with the Cullen Crest and a stretchy bracelet with a crystal heart for Edward and a disc that looks like Jacob's tattoo! Cat, the bracelet fits perfectly! And all of these were in little star drawstring bags. And there are Australian landscape cards. I love them. I'm crazy about jewelry and stationery! Last year I got an upright furniture style jewelry box where I can lay everything out and just open and decide as I get dressed. I think I will devote one of the empty drawers to just my Twilight jewels! Oh almost forgot and there was a key ring that says I [heart] Twilight. Thank you so much Cat. I love it all. I am very touched with the handmade things. Really fun and well done! Thank you so much! I'm spoiled.



I set up my treasures from Cat on the fabric she sent and in the upper right corner is the card and underneath is a stack of cards she gave also! You can see the key chain too and the cute little star bags she put everything in!

A note from Cat on how she created the Quileutte bead.
I managed to find some plain flat wooden beads ages ago. To make them, I just coloured the background and using PVA glue, stuck on a [computer] printout of the tattoo. It took a while to get [the printout] at the right size! I then put a seal over the whole lot and voilá! A Quiluette Wolf Pack bead is born!

TQC Exchange: Mel's gift from Wanda

SQUEAL OF JOY!!! I received my exchange package on Friday from my not-so-secret-anymore buddy MAMA WANDA! Here's what it was:

A gorgeous handmade Twilighty purse, which I am using to stash my take-along crafts (so far, knitting needles and yarn and x-stitching floss). It looks smaller than it is; inside it's huge! And I love it!!! So I open the package up and find all sortsa goodies, including these very fab Edward and Jacob New Moon pens. They came in a gorgeous case too! And, "after shopping mints" which are so cute. (I ate a third of the pack already...but then again, I DID go grocery shopping...) I got a FQ of beautiful green Fairy Frost. It's so pretty, I'm afraid of cutting it up! And a really pretty orange-and-gold fabric, which will be so pretty as the fairy's hair on DD's quilt! Lets see... oh yeah! And I saw a box of chocolates...or so I though! It's a chocolate calendar, with diffferent facts about chocolate every day! So fun!!!!!! There was also a yummy rosy all organic lip gloss that tastes like berries. And last but not least, tied to the strap of the beautiful purse, a bracelet!!!! I thought at first it was a Jacob-Edward bracelet, but upon closer inspection, it's ALL EDWARD!!!! There's a lion, the Cullen's crest, and an E charm on it. It was all beautifully wrapped in polka dot paper with a black velour ribbon. (I took a picture of it wrapped, but erased it by mistake.)

The image is a bit fuzzy... You can see the green fabirc to the left and the orange on to the right under the purse. (which is so fab!!! I can't believe Wanda made this for me!!!) I also put the little cards Wanda wrote by hand for me (that would be the red cards).

Twas The Night Before Christmas - Twilight Quilters style

Twas day turned to Twilight and all through the threads,
not one quilter TM was ready for bed,
Our clothes were all laid out with care,
in hopes that we'd slip out to New Moon knowing Edward would be there.
Hurrying and gathering our kerchiefs and caps,
last on our mind was a long winters nap.
When out in the driveway there arose such a clatter,
the neighbors came out to see what was the matter.
And what to our wondering eyes did appear,
but a shiny silver Volvo to take us there!
With a handsome hunk driver so lively and quick,
we knew it a moment it wasn't St. Nick!

More rapid than eagles the vampires they came,
And our driver hummed and called them by name,
Carlisle and Esme, Rosalie and Emmet, and Alice and Jasper will meet us in minutes,
Away from the porch and away from the wall,
They'll all be at the theater in the mall!

"As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly",
It felt as though the Volvo would take to the sky
So away we went and away we flew,
With the car full of quilting friends, and well you know who!
And then in a twinkling we heard a sound,
The prancing and pawing of a wolf around,
I opened the window and put out my head,
Poor Jacob was running alongside with dread,

Edward was dressed in designer wear,
And so would his family when we got there,
A ring box for Bella he held in his pocket back,
Meanwhile Jacob was concentrating on his pack.

Once at the theater the Volvo came to a stop,
He parked where he wanted and just hissed at the cop,
We all got out just in time to see,
As he stood in the forest asking Bella his wife to be.

Back to the car with no driver so quick,
We saw immediately we'd been tricked,
No Volvo anywhere, just the family car in site,
With a ticket on the windshield, oh that's a big bite!

We sprang to grab the ticket with a naughty whistle,
This was a thud in our hearts, not the down of a thistle,
But we exclaimed as we drove out of site,
Merry Christmas to all and to all a New Moon night!

New Moon Quilt: More Machine Quilting

After a long day at the machine, Angie wows us again with more quilted blocks! The details she adds as she quilts accent the blocks and make the quilt even more amazing.

Here is the quilt after it has been rolled on the quilting table. The soft and furry minkee backing fabric is visible along length of the quilt as it has been rolled over, pulling the center of quilt to an area of table where Angie can work on it.

New Moon Quilt: Japanese Lanterns

Just a few little fused lanterns,with machine stitching to represent the "line of glowing Japanese lanterns hung from the porch eaves, reflecting a soft radiance on the huge cedars that surrounded the house" as Bella arrives for her birthday party. I thought of piecing my own lanterns (actually made an attempt, getting as far as cutting) but I just couldn't help using these as they were just so cute and just the right size! And really that is how I imagined them anyway.

New Moon Quilt: Bella's Gifts

I fussy cut the first gift so as to create a moon in the middle of the gift. I orginally selected this particular fabric because it seemed to be similar to a present that Alice was holding in an official New Moon photo. I hand appliqued the squares for the packages and fused and stitched the ribbons. My background fabric is also symbolic of moons with the circular design. My roses are cut from another fabric and fused and machine stitched. And even though there are only two they represent the "hundreds of roses" used to decorate for Bella's birthday. They also balance the "small pile of silver wrapped gifts." And yes, the ribbon bows are washable!

Two Months Later.....Visit to the Stephenie Meyer Quilt

Hey everyone. In light of the fact that our fabulous quilt Piece, Love, Twilight will be displayed at the Pacific International Quilt Festival this coming weekend, I thought I should FINALLY post pictures from the last Quilt show it was in!

I am too lazy to write too much details, but my original writeup from that weekend is on the New Moon Charity Quilt thread on TM's...Day 1 and Day 2. Elizabeth added some details here.

Here is a slideshow of quits at the show:

I believe there were 99 quilts or so, I took pictures of our favorites. My absolute favorite (besides ours quilt of course ;) ) was #1 with the tree in the foreground and farmhouse in the distance. I absolutely LOVE seeing bare tree silhouettes, like when people wrap string lights around them up to the individual branches....there's something about trees that is just striking to me. I want to make a quilt like this someday.....

#26 with the two deer and waterfall is my second favorite for it's technique and complex layering. I took closeups of the details. Looks like the quilter fused snippets of fabric layered on top of each other for those wonderful fall leaves....again, striking!

And if you can keep count, Elizabeth's own quilt is #10! It's the Gorgeous bright multicolored dragonflies on cream background. I added a closeup of it so you (hopefully) can see the cool detail - she used a fabric folding (right?) technique to make the dragonflies and pinwheels 3D! Another cool idea I'm going to have to steal, er, I mean borrow!

Let's see how good my memory is....first is a photo I took from plane of the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine, largest in world and 2nd thing you can see with naked eye from space...second the Great Salt Lake....then the Temple and several shots of beautiful Temple gardens....exterior, interior, and roof view of Conference Center that seats 21,000 people (pictures just don't show how supermassive it is in there!).....and Tabernacle with that neat roof....and the North Visitor's Center that has a neat room you walk up a stairway and the whole thing has a breathtaking celestial mural.

Well, I had alot of fun on that trip, loved meeting you gals, and hope we can have more get-togethers in the future!

Stephenie Meyer Quilt: A Quilt Story

A couple of days ago Iris posted the announcement that the Stephenie Meyer Quilt which the Twilight Quilters Coven made was finished and on it's way to be quilted. I thought it was high time that a entry be published detailing how the quilt came to be.

At the beginning of April, the ladies that had been together at Twilight Moms supporting each other as they worked through the steps of the Twilight Mystery Quilt, started talking about how to fill their quilting time until the next steps were released since the quilt had been indeterminably delayed. We had all become good friends over the months despite none of us having ever met in person. We wanted to be able to continue to have something to work on together and chat about so as not to lose touch with each other.

In only a couple of days we had decided to make a quilt for Stephenie Meyer, designed the quilt, and organized into a quilter's coven. As quilters, we all thought what better way for us to show our love for Twilight and Stephenie Meyer than to make a quilt. We soon decided on our name through voting and the Twilight Quilters Coven was born!

We wanted all four of the books' iconic covers to be represented. Other blocks were suggested to represent characters and book events. A quote from each book would be chosen through a vote and used as cornerstones. We decided that a medallion-style quilt would best accomodate all of our needs.

Elizabeth graciously accepted leadership of our project and creatively organized all of our ideas into a quilt layout. She posted a dedicated thread at Twilight Moms for the quilt, drafted the quilt into a picture model, and set our deadline (roughly May 31st).



Elizabeth, Iris, Lisa, Liz, Jean, Jerri Lynn, Joyce, Shannon and Wanda would sew the blocks. All the blocks would be sent to Elizabeth and she would sew them all into the quilt top. The quilt would be quilted by a longarm quilter. Our goal would be to give it to Stephenie Meyer, hopefully personally.

We were fortunate that there were already some Twilight patterns available. Catherine Magraith had designed patterns for the Twilight Hands/Forbidden Fruit, Pawprint, and La Push Beach. The patterns are posted at Sewhooked under guest patterns. She granted permission for their use in our quilt and made a couple more unpublished Twilight patterns available to us: Bella's Truck, New Moon Parrot Tulips, and Bella's Bracelet. A Jennifer Ofenstein Sewhooked Twilight pattern was used for the Jacob Howling Wolf.

The rest of the blocks were either designed by the individual participants or modified from existing non-Twilight patterns to suit the quilt. Iris designed and constructed these blocks: The Meadow, Edward's Crystal Heart, Isle Esme/Feathers (using the Sewhooked Jennifer Ofenstein Quill pattern as it's foundation), Esme/Carlisle, and The Volturi: Clock Tower at Volterra. Jerri Lynn designed Charlie's block and machine embroidered the cornerstone book quotes. Elizabeth designed Vampire Baseball, Edward's Eyes, the Eclipse Ribbon, and the Breaking Dawn Chessboard. Wanda designed the Forks Trees. Joyce modified a pattern for Renesmee's Locket from a Shae Merritt Zelda Bomb pattern located at Sewhoooked. Shannon used a Jennifer Ofenstein Sewhooked Harry Potter pattern for the Alice/Jasper Crystal Ball.

Our project gained the attention of Vivian Love of Quilts with Love. Vivian became a Twilight Convert recently (read her blog entry here) because, afterall, who can resist Twilight? Vivian volunteered to donate the batting and quilt the Twilight Quilt.

A few changes were made along the way, but the quilt finished essentially as we planned it. Lisa and Liz had to drop out, but the Edward/Bella Cottage block was reassigned to Shannon. The Lion/Lamb block was substituted for the Wedding Flowers block since Shannon successfully pieced the Edward/Bella Wedding Dance block. Edward's Eyes was changed slightly to make it easier to construct as a 5" block.



The quilt has arrived safely at Quilts with Love. We all can't wait to see it and some of us are even planning a trip to see the finished quilt. It wouldn't be fair that only Elizabeth and Vivian get to see it. We all may finally meet each other.

Wanda

Hello! My name is Wanda which is a Polish name, but I am actually Irish. I have been married to my husband Stu for 30 years and we have two daughters who are grown, graduated from college and married!

I am new to Twilight and sometimes think I may be the oldest fan out there, but I certainly hope not. I first read Twilight in February of 2009. My daughter's friend suggested it to me, but at first I wasn't interested. Another lifelong friend called me one rainy day and asked me if I was curled up with Twilight and again I told her no. Anyway, then I for some reason decided that I would buy the first book just to see what all the hype was about and well you guessed it I was completely "bitten". Before I finished the first book I borrowed the others from my librarian friend,but realized I wanted to own them so I went out and bought the other three. I discovered my hairdresser was in love with Twilight so I didn't have a problem scheduling one of my appts. for 4 weeks out instead of the usual 5 as this meant we could talk more Twilight. My daughter's friend told me about Twilight Moms and that led me to the new friends who wanted to make a quilt for Stephenie Meyer.

I have been sewing and crafting something most of my life. I took Home Economics in high school (back then one semester was required of either sewing or foods) where I first learned to sew. I made lots of my own clothes then, but clothing wasn't my favorite thing to do. I tried home decor projects and later when I had children made costumes and clothing for them. One daughter was a figure skater and the other a dancer so I had a lot of costume work and beading over the years. And of course there was always mending! I took up tole painting, making Christmas ornaments (I still do this) rubber stamping, flower arranging, cooking and baking, collecting, refinishing furniture, container gardening etc. You can do a lot in 30 years of marriage! Almost seven years ago I finally took a quilting class thinking I would make just one quilt! But I found something I really really love to do and now I always have a quilt project in the works and will talk Twilight anytime! However, I still like collecting things. One of my favorite collections is my vintage aprons. I love them for their fabrics and their cute designs. I also collect other vintage linens, hats, teacups, plates and purses. I love hanging out with girlfriends for lunch, shopping and movies.

I feel so blessed to have been able to be a part of the quilt for Stephenie Meyer. It certainly was a way to show my appreciation for her book works which have brought me a great deal of pleasure. I think about the characters and their stories all the time. There is a depth there that catches you by surprise and you want to think of it all the time. It all seems so perfectly matched...quilting, friends and Twilight!
