Stephenie Meyer Quilt: Charity Donation Part II

We entered the quilt we made for Stephenie Meyer in the Springville Museum of Art Quilt Show. Our quilt was awarded Best Group Quilt, with a prize of $100. As a group, we decided that the money should be donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, the official TwilightMOMS charity. We decided that this was indeed a worthy cause.

This letter from the ALSF organization came this week. Although I'm sure it is a letter they send to any donor, I thought it was worth sharing.

Dear Twilight Quilter's Coven,

Thank you for your recent generous donation of $100.00 to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

As you may know, Alex's Lemonade Stand was founded by our daughter, Alexandra "Alex" Scott, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma (a childhood cancer) just two days before her first birthday. By the time she was four years old, Alex knew firsthand of the challenges faced by children with difficult to treat cancers. She set out to change that -- one cup at a time -- by raising money for childhood cancer research through a lemonade stand in our front yard. Her front yard lemonade stand became a yearly tradition and her efforts inspired a national movement. At the time of her passing in 2004, at the age of 8, Alex's efforts had raised one million dollars to help find a cure for the disease that took her life. Her front yard stand has now grown into Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a national charity dedicated to Alex's vision of finding a cure for all children with cancer.

Your generous contribution has a direct impact on children with cancer. The money raised since Alex's first stand in our front yard has funded over 100 research projects at hospitals across the country, filling critical gaps in the process of bringing new treatments to children with difficult to cure cancers.

No one can express what your support of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation means to children with cancer and their parents better than Sue Levine, whose son battled an incurable cancer for several years, "To me it is astonishing what a 4 year old created that helped literally keep my son alive."

Stephenie Meyer Quilt: Charity Donation

After completion, we entered the quilt we made for Stephenie Meyer in the Springville Museum of Art Quilt Show, which ran July 17, through September 2, 2009. There were 93 quilts accepted into the show and the committee awarded 19 ribbons. Our quilt was awarded Best Group Quilt, with a prize of $100. As a group, we decided that the money should be donated to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, the official TwilightMOMS charity. The donation was finally made on November 19th at the Utah New Moon Movie Premiere in Utah. Amy (L), one of the charity coordinators for the event accepts the check for $100 made to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. We are delighted to give this money to such a worthy cause.

Two Months Later.....Visit to the Stephenie Meyer Quilt

Hey everyone. In light of the fact that our fabulous quilt Piece, Love, Twilight will be displayed at the Pacific International Quilt Festival this coming weekend, I thought I should FINALLY post pictures from the last Quilt show it was in!

I am too lazy to write too much details, but my original writeup from that weekend is on the New Moon Charity Quilt thread on TM's...Day 1 and Day 2. Elizabeth added some details here.

I believe there were 99 quilts or so, I took pictures of our favorites. My absolute favorite (besides ours quilt of course ;) ) was #1 with the tree in the foreground and farmhouse in the distance. I absolutely LOVE seeing bare tree silhouettes, like when people wrap string lights around them up to the individual branches....there's something about trees that is just striking to me. I want to make a quilt like this someday.....

#26 with the two deer and waterfall is my second favorite for it's technique and complex layering. I took closeups of the details. Looks like the quilter fused snippets of fabric layered on top of each other for those wonderful fall leaves....again, striking!

And if you can keep count, Elizabeth's own quilt is #10! It's the Gorgeous bright multicolored dragonflies on cream background. I added a closeup of it so you (hopefully) can see the cool detail - she used a fabric folding (right?) technique to make the dragonflies and pinwheels 3D! Another cool idea I'm going to have to steal, er, I mean borrow!

Let's see how good my memory is....first is a photo I took from plane of the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine, largest in world and 2nd thing you can see with naked eye from space...second the Great Salt Lake....then the Temple and several shots of beautiful Temple gardens....exterior, interior, and roof view of Conference Center that seats 21,000 people (pictures just don't show how supermassive it is in there!).....and Tabernacle with that neat roof....and the North Visitor's Center that has a neat room you walk up a stairway and the whole thing has a breathtaking celestial mural.

Well, I had alot of fun on that trip, loved meeting you gals, and hope we can have more get-togethers in the future!

Stephenie Meyer Quilt: Quilt Show Update

I am pleased to announce that the Stephenie Meyer Quilt has been judged as Best Group Quilt in the 36th Annual Quilt show at the Springville Museum of Art!

I attended and accepted the ribbon for the Best Group Quilt at tonight's special award presentation and preview show. 19 of the 20 awards were presented tonight (The Viewer's Choice award will be awarded at the close of the show, see details below). After the ribbons were presented to the winners, each of us got the privilege of hanging the ribbon next to our quilts! In addition to the beautiful blue ribbon, we were awarded a $100 cash prize. The nine of us involved in making this quilt have decided to donate the money to charity.

The awards presented tonight were:
Best of Show, Director's Award, Best Hand Quilting, Artistic Impression (2), Best Hand Applique, Artistic Design, Best Machine Quilting, Visual Impact, Machine Quilting & Embellishment, Flawless Workmanship (2), Creativity & Combined Techniques, Best Use of Color, Best Machine Piecing (you should see this one), Fabric Selection, Machine Piecing, Best Group Quilt (that's us!) and Fine Applique.

The Stephenie Meyer Quilt will be on display from July 17th through September 2nd. During the run of the show, those in attendance will have a chance to vote for their favorite quilt of the 91 quilts on display and the Viewer's Choice award will be given at the close of the show.

Stephenie Meyer Quilt: A Work of Art

The Twilight Quilt is completely finished! Vivian delivered it to me on Tuesday (it was so nice to meet her) and I feverishly worked to get it bound, labeled and a sleeve on it so that, as Shannon said, we could treat it like a work of art. As chance would have it, the 36th Annual Quilt Show at the Springville Museum of Art in Utah was accepting quilts this week. The nine of us who worked on the quilt took a vote and as a group we decided to enter it in the show. This is a juried display at the museum. Quality in workmanship, design, color, originality, and general appeal will be the principle criteria applied by the judges. There will be awards for “Best of Show”, “Director’s Award”, “Best Hand Quilting,” as well as seventeen other awards. We obviously don't qualify for the "Best Hand Quilting" award, but is it too much to hope for "Director's Award," or "Best of Show?" (I hope the Director is a fan of the series!) The Quilt Show runs from July 17th to September 2nd and the Awards Presentation and Show Preview will be on Wednesday, July 15th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm MST. My family and I are planning on attending and I will post the results (which I hope will be good!) as soon as I can on Wednesday night.

This quilt has truly been a labor of love for all of us. Each block is an amazing work of art and Vivian's quilting, as you saw in the preview last week, added greatly to the beauty of it. She used matching thread (white on white, black on black, red on red, etc.). She highlighted and accentuated all of the beautiful blocks, quilting design around the main parts of each block, and mostly just tacked the blocks down in the detailed areas so as not to distract from the beautiful work.
